All Levels Strength & Alignment Workshop with Ann-Katherin Martins
Saturday 1:00-4:00pm and Sunday 9:00-11:00am, $130
Ann-Kathrin Martins has been studying yoga since childhood. In 2004, during her Masters Degree in Fine Arts in England, she chose to follow her love of movement with an in-depth study of yoga and pilates as well as various dance disciplines. After moving to Victoria, BC in 2006 Ann-Kathrin received her Yoga Teaching Certificate from MokSana Yoga Center. She is currently studying Vijnana Yoga under Elizabeth Peckham and teaching a variety of classes throughout Victoria.
Join Ann-Katherin as she examines alignment in key standing poses to create a sense of steadiness and ease, while observing the relationship of of these postures with more advanced poses. Focus of the workshop will also include lengthening the back body and releasing shoulder and neck muscles by targeting upper body strength.
Alignment concepts will be integrated into a creative and dynamic flow during the Sunday session.
Register by April 6th to hold your spot.
Meteors and Manifestation
Snow crunches beneath my feet, but the world is silent. On this frozen moonlit night my senses are muted, leaving space for my mind to wander to and fro. My imagination gathers wishes and dreams as I watch shooting starts draw their white tails of light across the skies black canvas.
Ptolemy had a theory that stars slipped from the sky when gods peaked down from the heavens. He believed that in these small instances a window of opportunity was opened where whispered wishes reached the ears of the gods.
Some call it a wish, while others call it prayer. Whatever your spiritual belief may be there is undoubtedly strength in the power of thought and manifestation. When we put our energy into an idea or a dream that comes from our hearts morals, beliefs and creativity we are powerful beyond measure.
Manifestations are messages of the heart; the actualization of the life we really want through positive thought. To reveal the true nature of our manifestations we must first learn to detach ourselves from our egos and objects of the physical world. In doing so we begin to realize that happiness and bliss is not based in power, wealth or dominance but rather in our connectedness to others and to our natural surroundings.
Yoga and meditation provide a platform for quieting the mind and clearing the outer world from the inner world. It’s like sweeping away the cobwebs in our minds, where doubts and fears get tangled. When the mind is quiet, our hearts desires can be heart, and this is where we find our light; this is how we unveil our true selves.
Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate; our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light not our darkness that most frightens us…
With the turn of the New Year take the leap to find yourself, to find your path to real happiness. Step onto a yoga mat, meditate, breath – be brave.

We hope you had a beautiful summer despite Mother Natures moody temperament and the few little weather blunders that came with it. Here’s what we’ve been up to in the past few sun (salutation) filled months.
Some bitter-sweet news, Michelle is taking some time away from teaching as grows a wee little baby in her belly. We will miss her dearly but wish her the best with the beautiful things coming her way!
After a summer of growth Amber will too be leaving us at the end September She is off to India to further her teacher training, followed by a move to Vancouver. Good luck with your new adventures!
Ashley has returned from a four week stint in Mexico where she received another 200 hour Registered Yoga Teacher Certificate. She will be spreading her love of teaching throughout the walls of the studio this fall.
We welcome our new Meditation teacher Katie! She has joined our little community to guide us in chakra meditation (see description below), Friday evenings at 6:30pm. A beauty class to join after Restorative Yoga.

In May I took a working-vacation to the lower mainland, where I participated in the second annual Whistler Yoga Conference. Walking through the doors I could immediately sense how the conference had grown and become more refined since my attendance the previous year. There were now more volunteers, more vendors, complimentary sweet energy crackers and fresh filtered water at the entrance of each room, not to mention the breath taking mountainous backdrop view to the newly appointed venue at the Fairmont Chateau Whistler. As I signed for my conference pass I could feel my energy being met and exponentially increased with the energy of the room.
First on my program was a Master Jivamukti class with Tine James, a teacher I had the pleasure to practice with the year before. Though the Jivamukti yoga style is much different than my own Vinyasa roots, the messages weaved into the practice were inspiring. One message that stood out in my mind was the idea that every guru, or teacher, is relevant and every guru enters your life for a reason, no matter their message or level of experience.
Next on my schedule was a “Bollywood Vinyasa” class with a teacher brought in from Los Angeles. I chose this class with the thought of “Hmmm, Bollywood…its good to try new things”. Nothing could have prepared me for this class. We were directed to pump our rumps and shake our hips; encouraged to fill the room vocally with moans and sighs. I couldn’t take it. My moans turned to shrieks - of laughter, and my shrieking laughter soon turned to the silent laughter that steals your breath and causes you to buckle over and clench your gut.
Feeling totally distracted and unfocused, I thought to myself “this is NOT yoga!" but then my mind turned back to the message from the Jivamukti teacher – every guru comes into your life for a reason. It was up to me to learn what that reason was. So here are the lessons I chose to learn:
- Deep, deep belly laughs are like addictive drugs or delicious dessert. The more you have, the more you want.
- Deep, deep belly laughs spark from the most unexpected places, to find them you have to be willing to explore and play.
- Deep, deep belly laughs are more valuable than gemstones and gold.
Leaving Bollywood I felt refreshed and childlike, inspired to make a point of removing expectations from life so I don’t miss out on the juicy stuff that is sitting right in front of me. And that my friend is Santosa!

It's spring! It's time to clean the dust and dirt from our homes and plant pretty flowers and yummy food in the soil. This is the season when we seek renewal and growth. So keeping that trend in mind, Under the Yoga Tree is offering another 30 Day Yoga Challenge!
A yoga challenge is the perfect way to bring mobility and immense strength to the physical body as well as to the emotional and mental bodies. When I did my first 30 Day Yoga Challenge I was shocked by the outcome. I felt incredible. My mind was clear, my priorities in life shifted for the better. I felt a ton of stress relief, I felt happy, inspired and my body felt stronger than ever before. The challenge sincerely changed my life.
By joining, you will be challenged to step onto your mat 6 times a week. To add a little *flexibility* to the challenge you can implement the following options:
- once a week you may practice twice in one day
- once a week you're welcome practice at home... minimum 20 minutes. Meditation counts, just get onto your mat!
- outta town for a bit? No problemo! You are welcome to practice at out of town studios, just present us with your receipt.
The yoga challenge is not a competition, it is a challenge to your individual self. So if you miss a day, don't worry, you aren't going to get kicked out. We won't revoke your studio privileges. Again, this is something you can do for you!
Enrollment for the challenge is open until June 6th, so you can start anytime between now and June 6th. Again we wanted to offer a little ahem... flexibility to your life.
Enrollment is $140. This will give you access to every class on the yoga schedule, including all pre-registered classes. There will also be a draw prize for all successful participants.... talk about sweetening the deal ;)
Those of you who already have a 30-Day unlimited membership, fear not, your current membership will be put on hold the day you start your challenge. It will be waiting for you at the end of your challenge, ready for re-activation.
You're gonna love this :)
